Affordable housing leaders call for $175 million investment

Vermont Business Magazine The Coalition of Housing Advocates released the following statement urging state governments across the board to put more money into housing. They argue that the considerable resources already spent are having an impact, but the state will need about 10,000 more homes over the next five years. It seeks to allocate $10,000 to multiple institutions.


I need more houses. For all neighbors, of all shapes and sizes.

There is a shortage of adequate affordable housing and we are at risk of losing some of what we have.

Vermont has allocated significant state and federal resources to build new homes in the past two years.

We are beginning to see the benefits and results of these investments. Nearly 1,000 homes have been completed or under construction this year since the pandemic forced 2,800 of his homeless families to move into permanent housing. This is significant progress, but without additional resources it will not come any closer to solving the housing needs of the community.

Over the next five years, Vermont will need 10,000 homes. Half of these homes should be very affordable for essential workers in Vermont.

This legislative session provides a once-in-a-generation opportunity to address the state’s housing shortage using available one-time funds, ARPA, or other funding sources. Prioritizing housing with these resources benefits future generations.

An additional $175 million allocated to state agencies such as the Vermont Housing Protection Commission, Housing and Community Development Authority, and the Vermont Housing Finance Agency will enable community partners to:

• Develop much-needed apartments statewide.

• Invest in Vermont’s existing housing stock, especially in rural areas.

• Prevent displacement of low-income Vermonters in communities large and small by preserving existing housing.

• Provide homeownership opportunities.

• Improve housing for farm workers.

• Stabilize artificial home parks.

• Reuse underutilized buildings.

• Strengthen smart growth and climate-friendly building practices and sitings.When

• Provide housing for the most vulnerable Vermonters and strengthen shelter capacity.

We know there are other necessary policy reforms and budget allocations for programs to help vulnerable Vermonters. These should go hand in hand with continued investment in housing. Collectively, these are investments in the health of citizens, businesses, economies and communities.
