DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) – Actor Idris Elba and his wife Sabrina Doure Elba on Thursday offered more help to the world’s poorest countries in the form of investments rather than aid. He called on the business community and politicians to do so.
At the opening ceremony of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting in the Swiss mountain resort of Davos, Mr. and Mrs. Elvas were honored for their work on environmental conservation, food security and climate change.
The couple, who are goodwill ambassadors for the United Nations’ International Fund for Agricultural Development, appealed to attendees of the annual summit for prompt financial assistance to those hit by food shortages and climate change.
“The poor in this world are not just asking for help and alms, they are asking for investment,” said Idris Elba.
Added “We understand the power and change that this room will bring…we can move with agility and speed. Your speed is needed now Nation.”
Sabrina Dhowre Elba focuses on food crises in Somalia, Haiti, Sudan and other countries, focusing on the plight of small farmers who cannot access the resources they need and produce one-third of the planet’s food. I guessed
“We’re here in Davos to shine a light on people and countries that haven’t made headlines like my husband,” she said, looking at her partner.
