Despite worsening broader macroeconomic conditions, Hollywood’s voracious appetite for content shows no signs of cooling off. Over the past few years, many studios and production companies have been acquired at very high valuations.
The pace of content M&A accelerated in 2021 and really kicked into gear in early 2022 after the nearly $1 billion sale of Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine. This year he had four major content acquisition deals in January alone.
Quality rates cost money. If a content company is willing to pay big bucks to buy your show, sometimes it makes more sense to buy the content company. Some of the content purchases were made by other media companies, but most were made by deep-pocketed private equity firms looking to cash in on highly attractive IP.
Variety Intelligence Platform has closely tracked a series of content acquisitions. We will continue to monitor developments closely and update the chart below as new deals are announced. Check back regularly for updates.
